The film is based on a six-act play by the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, who was brutally murdered by Franco's government during the Civil War for his support of the Republican government, and whose work was banned for a long time during the rebel regime.

The story unfolds in the form of a flamenco dance/documentary, which is told to the audience through the cast's preparations, rehearsals between the immediate departure of the bloody tragedy: the wedding night, the groom's mother is preoccupied, she stumbled upon the bride is the daughter of her husband's enemy, her heart rises up in the ominous foreboding. The bride's cousin, Leonardo (Antonio Gades), who is deeply in love with his cousin, takes advantage of the chaos to elope with his lover. The groom, who learns of the news, chases after the bride with a knife, and the two men engage in a bloody duel ......
